Future Gym
Building a Healthy Future
The Redwood Prep Student & Community Sports and Wellness Complex: more than just a gym. Follow our progress as we build a space for students and neighbors to learn, move, and thrive together.
Our Story: From Founding to Future
Who We Are
Redwood Prep began in 2011 as a community-based public charter school, started by teachers, parents, and community members who believed there was a better way to educate children. They wanted a different model, one that sees each student as a unique individual and builds learning around who they are.
What We Believe
Our five core values guide everything we do: Academic Excellence, Social Responsibility, Community, Whole Child, and Shared Leadership. Students, parents, staff, and board all have a voice in shaping our school.
How We Got Here
Community was part of our story from day one. For years, we did not have a school building of our own. Through partnerships and hard work, we earned our own school site, and over a decade later it is the home of a school where every student belongs. Today, Redwood Prep is a Universal Design for Learning Showcase Site, and educators from across California visit to see our approach in action.
Where We’re Heading
We are doing it again. Once, a school site seemed out of reach, and our community made it happen. Now we have our sights on a gym and a sports and wellness complex for our students and neighbors. We already own two acres, and we are building it one phase at a time. We’d love for you to be part of it.
Our Phases of Development
We’re building the Redwood Prep Student & Community Sports and Wellness Complex one step at a time. Each phase creates something useful for our students while moving us closer to our long-term goal. Here’s where we are today and what’s ahead.
-
Every great project starts with a solid foundation. We’ve completed our survey and submitted an application to the City of Fortuna for a lot line adjustment. Once approved, the 2-acre property will be held solely in Redwood Prep’s name. This step secures clear ownership of the land and allows us to move forward with the work that follows.
Status: Underway
-
With ownership in place, we’ll begin turning raw land into usable space. This phase includes grading to create a safe, level surface, removing stumps and other obstacles, and installing fencing to secure the site. It’s the groundwork that makes everything else possible, and it brings our students one step closer to using the property.
Target: By June 2028
-
This is the phase where students will start to see and feel the difference. We’ll add parking, a track, and a field, creating space for physical education, athletics, recess, and school events. These improvements will give our students a place to run, play, and compete years before the gym is built.
Target: By June 2029
-
Our long-term goal is the full Redwood Prep Student & Community Sports and Wellness Complex. This phase covers the infrastructure needed to support a building, along with construction of the gym itself. It’s the culmination of everything that came before, and a lasting investment in the health and well-being of our students and community.
Target: Begin building by June 2036
